FLORENCE ON OUR OWN -- WEDNESDAY

After the two tours from the day before and our hectic schedule, our goal for the day was to sleep in, organize our things and find our way to the highest point in Florence.  We had a late breakfast, accomplished our tasks and caught a cab to the highest point.  As everything else we had seen it was beautiful.  San Miniato al Monte is a basilica and it is described as one of the finest Romanesque structures in Tuscany and one of the most beautiful churches in Italy and the construction on it started in 1013.  There is an Olivetan Monastery attached to the right side of the church which is still in operation.

Most people only get to the lower point which has an overlook of the city, but never make to the monastery which is another half mile up with about a hundred stairs.

We made it taking pictures along the way and went through the church and the cemeteries. I have posted a few but more to come.

Walking back down we found a restaurant still open (since everything closes from 2:00 until 4:30 we always seemed to showing up too late).  We had a great lunch, with wine of course, and headed back into town, walking this time down the couple of mile pathway.  It took us through an even older part of the city.

We had seen a Galileo museum the day before and wanted to get to it before it closed.  We made it.  Wow!!! To see the evolution of many scientific discoveries, such as sextants, telescopes, machinery in its most early stages was mind boggling.  Perhaps if someone had taught me science and math using some of the earliest tools it would have all made more sense to me.

In any event that brought us to the end of another day –

Time for happy hour.

Ciao!!!
